- My freshman year, I was doing horrible in Chemistry and on the verge of failing the class. I could not understand it, no matter how hard I tried. It seemed to just be something that I was unable to grasp. It wasn't until near the end of the semester, when I started getting outside help and a tutor to help me one on one that it started to make sense. I was even able to still earn a respectable grade in the class.
- I learned that semester that it's ok to get help from others. Just because you are unable to do it alone, doesn't mean that you should accept it. Use your abilities to the fullest, but also acknowledge what you struggle with and have a plan to overcome those struggles.
- Failure can be very difficult, but it should not limit you. I handle with failure with recognizing where I messed up, and learning from it so that I don't make the same mistake again. This class has helped me realize even more that failing is okay. You grow from failure. With that, I do think that I am more willing to take risks now than I was four months ago.

Hi Matthew,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, I know I've definitely been in the same boat before, where I've gotten to the point of accepting defeat rather than reaching out for help. Some people find it difficult to get help, especially if they don't know where to look, so I think you make a really important point here, that there's nothing wrong with asking for assistance in order to succeed.

Hey there Matthew,
ReplyDeleteGreat points that you made here. I have sought tutoring assistance on a few occasions as well. I think that sometimes some of us just need a new perspective on some classes. Not that it's a student's lack of trying or an instructor's lack of teaching, I just think that information can be presented in so many different ways that sometimes it's in such a manner that some folks don't understand. I enjoyed your post, check mine out if you get a chance: http://breident3003.blogspot.com/2016/04/celebratig-failure.html
